I won't pretend this one is comfortable, and that's precisely why I treasure it. A pale, grieving face with a red bulb of a nose and those caged yellow teeth, painterly and raw, with real tears. It's the most haunting portrait in the collection and I adore its nerve.

Porthole To A Storm

Peering into this one feels like leaning against a ship's brass porthole and finding a whole Tuscan world on the other side -- a stone tower and vineyard rolling out under a sky that can't decide between thunderhead grey and electric violet. The dark riveted frame makes the drama inside glow all the brighter, and that bruised purple sky is what closed the deal for me.
